Stomach cancer is the second largest killer in India; Dr. Pradeep Jain, Fortis Healthcare examines the reasons why
In the case of stomach cancer and its prevalence in India, it seems that many of the risk factors for the disease can be traced back to individuals’ diets and lifestyles. The typical Indian diet is in general much different than that of those in Western countries, especially in poorer urban and rural communities. There are many locations in India in which the typical diet is relatively low in fiber. Fiber helps to regulate the gastric system, and not consuming fiber can lead to many gastric problems, including an increased risk of stomach cancer.
Another potential cause of stomach cancer is the excessive consumption of spicy foods, which according to Dr. Pradeep Jain, Fortis Healthcare can lead to a chronic inflammation of the stomach lining. If this is not treated, cancer can develop as a result. A non-vegetarian, meat-heavy diet can also be the cause of this stomach inflammation.
